SC AAS Volunteer Training: Macroinvertebrate Monitoring

June 29th 2023 ( 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM )

Friends of the Reedy River will be hosting a Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Workshop on Thursday, June 29 from 9am to 3pm in Greenville, SC.  This training is open to anyone who is interested in learning about the program and how to do biannual testing of local waterways. After completing the training, Adopt-a-Stream volunteers will be able to pick a testing site and borrow FORR's macroinvertebrate sampling kit to monitor within the Reedy River Watershed.

Register Here!

You do not need to be an environmentalist, fisherman, or scholar to become a water quality monitor! All are welcome to learn how to collect data that can help protect and restore freshwater streams through the SC Adopt-a-Stream program.

This training will provide classroom and in-stream instruction for volunteer monitors on how to: select a monitoring site, use equipment properly, collect samples, test water quality, enter data, assess stream conditions, and practice safety in the field.  You will learn about stream habitat and pollution sources, and practice collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates.

Individuals must pass an open-book exam at the end of the workshop to become a certified volunteer and be able to enter data into the www.scadoptastream.org database. Volunteers are encouraged to adopt a site to sample twice annually to establish valuable baseline data for your stream.

This is an in-person workshop.  You must attend the full workshop and pass the open-book, open-note test to become a certified water quality monitoring volunteer. Please bring your own lunch, dress for the weather and invite a friend!

After registering, more information, including exact location, will be emailed to you no later than Tuesday, June 27.

Learn more about the program by visiting www.scadoptastream.org. If this training time and location does not work for you, please check out other upcoming trainings hereThere is no cost to register for the workshop, but space is limited.  Contact us with any questions.
